About Maine Junior Muster

The Maine Junior Muster is an annual competition in Scarborough, Maine, that brings together high school aged junior firefighters, ages 14 to 18, from programs across the state to test their skills and represent their home departments. Founded in 2022 by Scarborough Fire Department Captain Daryen Granata after a conversation with his son about firefighter training, the event carries forward Maine’s deep firefighting tradition, which dates back to the first recorded firefighter muster in the United States, held in Bath in 1849. Competitors take on real, hands-on events like hose rolling, gear donning, cylinder changes, hose stretching, and dressing a fire hydrant.
